About the illustrations
On returning from a road trip across America and not being able to select just one photograph to capture the essence of the trip, it became obvious that it was the journey itself that should somehow be illustrated.
The first illustration took inspiration from the fine line detailing present in cartography, the bold route markers of road maps and silk maps. Combining the textures of cotton thread and watercolour paper gave an otherwise flat two dimensional illustration a sense of depth.
Whilst stitching the first illustration, methods to manipulate and accentuate the media developed. Interesting relationships between line length, tightness of thread and closeness of fine detail lead to exploring patternation of line.
Architectural studies further pushed the relationship between line and media, perfectly suiting the forms present in early 20th century London buildings.
The illustrations continue to develop and new pieces will be added shortly.
